About the client

The Laboratory Information System (LIS) is a large-scale web application for medical labs. It enables staff to manage patient samples, track analyses, process results, and generate reports. The system also supports metadata configuration, image capture integration, and decentralized management for multi-branch hospitals and their referring doctors.

Client’s challenges & expectations

Before starting the project, the client’s legacy system struggled with slow performance, fragmented workflows, and a lack of scalability. Essential features such as reporting, billing, and image handling were missing, and poor documentation made onboarding new developers difficult.

The client expected us to deliver a stable, user-driven, and modular platform that could support lab technicians, pathologists, and administrators in their daily operations. They valued our expertise in UX and product design to ensure the system would be intuitive and aligned with real lab workflows. At the same time, they needed clear architecture and documentation to simplify future development, ensure compliance readiness, and provide a foundation for scaling across multiple labs and hospital branches.

Our approach

  1. Product strategy & design foundation
    • Researched competitors and defined MVP scope, including modules for patients, accessions, tests, insurance, and physicians
    • Designed UX flows and interface logic tailored to lab staff and pathologists
    • Created a design system with reusable Material UI components for speed and consistency
    • Structured a clean, modular architecture to ensure scalability and maintainability
  2. Product development
    • Implemented patient management, test accessioning, physician, and insurance modules
    • Built secure user authorization flows (login, signup, reset password)
    • Developed scalable data tables for ICD/CPT codes and demographic information
    • Integrated workflow features like team management and role-based access control
    • Planned post-MVP extensions such as reporting, billing, messaging, and slide image management
  3. Collaboration & process
    • Agile development with sprints tracked in Jira
    • Twice-weekly standups and weekly timesheet reporting with stakeholders
    • Regular reviews with the client’s technical team and medical advisors

Results

The new Laboratory Information System provided a stable and scalable architecture for managing daily diagnostic workflows. By refactoring the frontend, introducing modular architecture, and documenting processes, the platform now enables faster sample processing, smoother collaboration across multiple labs, and easier onboarding for new developers. Key modules like patient management, test accessioning, insurance, and physician records were successfully launched, while planned reporting and billing features set the stage for long-term growth.

  1. Business value
    • Improved lab efficiency and reduced operational complexity
    • Improved data structure and traceability, supporting labs in meeting U.S. healthcare standards
    • Strategic foundation for scaling into new hospitals and markets
    • Better positioning with physicians and hospital partners as a reliable technology provider
